The Gulf Savannah is an area where time almost stands still. The landscape is as vast as it is empty. The quietness pervades and is almost deafening, broken only by the squawk of a native bird or a wandering beast. Each remote town has its own unique savannah outback style, coupled with a friendliness second to none.
There’s two iconic savannah rail journeys, which are as unique and special as the area itself. These fascinating modes of transport criss-cross the Gulf Savannah outback, allowing you to be a part of a long-gone history. A journey on the Gulflander is a tour back in time, to an era when a padded seat was a luxury and roads were bullock tracks. To a time where gold was the currency and home was a canvas and sapling humpy. And a generation where children were born in the dust and education was the school of hard knocks.
These days tourism is playing an ever-increasing economic role in the Australian savannah, with many pastoralists opening their cattle properties to tourists. So, we invite you to come to the Gulf Savannah to capture the emotion and romance, tragedies and triumphs of Australia’s amazing savannah outback.
A holiday to the Gulf Savannah Australia offers adventure, beauty and a lesson in history giving the visitor a multitude of savannah experiences.
The Gulf Savannah region extends from the Great Dividing Range in the east, to the Northern Territory in the west encompassing an area of some 186,000 square kilometres. It was once known as the ‘Outback By The Sea’, with its miles of untouched beaches, lush bushland, remote cattle stations, historic mining towns and breathtaking National Parks.
The Gulf Savannah is a part of the larger Savannah Way, which is the area and journey between Cairns on Queensland’s eastern coastline and Broome, on the Western Australian coast. As you travel through the vast and stark undeveloped land mass, its spectacular countryside and interesting history, you will be enveloped by the sense of magnificent history and hardship endured by the early settlers and Gold prospectors.
Our 9-day Gulf Savannah tour is accommodated. Highlights include the Undara Lava Tubes, which extend 160 kilometres making them the longest lava flow from a single volcano on our planet. Cobbold Gorge, Australia’s youngest gorge, which occupies an area of about 80 square km and was created by a process that began 1700 million years ago. A diverse range of vegetation grows in the gorge, forming a habitat for abundant bird and wildlife. It is also home to fish such as black bream, archerfish, long tom and perch, and freshwater crocodiles. A cruise at Karumba, a visit to the Burke & Wills Camp 119 and the Herberton Historic Village as well as two savannah rail journeys are some of the highlights of this tour.
