Cape York Peninsula ~ The Best Time to Visit

The Cape is a country of rough roads, remote country and amazing natural and cultural landmarks and experiences. It’s also one of Australia’s far northern realms, closer to the equator than any other part of the country. As such, it really only has two seasons, wet and dry.

The Wet Season

The wet is the hottest part of the year, from November to April. November and December marks the ‘build up’ to the rains. The days are hot, usually over 30 degrees Celsius, and the evenings hover around 26 degrees Celsius. It’s also extremely humid, making exploration generally a bit uncomfortable. Once the rains come, they stay for a while, saturating the rivers and soaking the land. This leaves many of the Cape York communities isolated. Roads become impassable and bridges are flooded. Rivers join across various low-level plains to form an inland sea. Many of the local businesses close their doors. Environmentally, it’s also a time of rejuvenation for the flora of the Cape.

The Dry Season

The dry season is May to October and this is the best time to visit Cape York. The days are still warm, with maximum temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius, but the humidity has decreased, and the evenings are cool and pleasant. The roads are passable, and the Cape York businesses and communities open their doors, for another year of visitors.

Our Tours Are The Best Time To Visit Cape York

Our Cape York tours start in May, which is a great time to see the landscape at its green, lush best. The rivers and lagoons are full, birdlife is plentiful and there’s many flowering and fruiting plants to be seen. The usually dry savannah plains are lush green fields of grass. It’s also a relatively quiet tourism time, which means as some of the first visitors for the year, you’re really escaping the crowds.

Moving into June and July the evening temperatures get cooler, dropping below 25 degrees Celsius. The days are big blue-sky affairs, sometimes dotted with fluffy white clouds. It’s a glorious time to visit Cape York. The grassy plains are becoming golden, radiating sunshine and revealing the giant termite mounds.

July and September are some of the busiest months in Cape York. Visitors from Australia’s southern states are escaping the cold weather, enjoying a warm adventure on Cape York. Wildlife is abundant, especially birds including black-necked storks, magpie geese, palm cockatoos and eclectus parrots. As the dry season continues and lakes diminish, these creatures become easier to find, concentrating around permanent waterholes.
